Pregnancy and Chiropractic!

This is one of the most important times to receive chiropractic care due to the amount of change and adaptation required by a woman’s body in such a short amount of time. As the fetus grows in the womb, imbalances and misalignments within the structure of the pelvis become exacerbated leading to pain and discomfort, especially during the last trimester of pregnancy. Very specific and gentle adjustments throughout pregnancy can eliminate and even prevent these common discomforts by restoring balance to the body as well as promote optimal fetal growth and development.

The uterus rapidly stretches to accommodate the growing baby. If pelvic misalignment is present, intrauterine constraint may result from an imbalance of the ligaments and other soft tissue structures connecting the uterus to the pelvis. This constraint limits the space the baby has to grow and turn which could lead to problems with development and less than optimal positioning for labor and delivery (transverse or breech presentation for example).

Chiropractic care during pregnancy helps to alleviate discomfort, especially in the low back and pelvis, and aides in balancing the uterus, thereby giving your child optimal room to grow and develop to its fullest potential. Regular chiropractic adjustments have also been shown to create an environment for an easier, safer, and more natural delivery.

Dr. Amanda Griggs, DC, DICCP is a Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics and certified in the Webster Technique, which is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system and facilitates biomechanical balance in pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments. This has been shown to reduce the effects of intrauterine constraint, allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth. This technique should be performed on a pregnant mom throughout pregnancy and has been found to be very effective even when performed during the late stages of pregnancy when the baby is not yet head down, but should be. We invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Amanda to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding your care during pregnancy. She will be happy to meet with you and discuss how you can benefit from chiropractic care through this special time in your life!
